Drink the Whole Leaf — Organic Sencha, Finely Ground

This is organic sencha leaf — from Taruwakien's Kawane farm, the same JAS-certified farm behind our everyday Organic Sencha — ground into a fine powder. Whisk it like matcha and you drink the whole leaf, not just the steeped extract. The character is the clean, refreshing Kawane sencha you already know; the difference is that nothing gets discarded.

Loose-leaf sencha brews out, and the spent leaves go in the bin. A whisked powder works the other way: the leaf goes into the cup, so the color and body of the leaf stay in the cup instead of being left behind. It is the same tea in a more complete drinking form.

This is not matcha. Matcha is shaded leaf (tencha), processed and ground for deep umami and a fine, ceremonial texture. This is unshaded sencha leaf ground into powder — brighter and lighter in character, more everyday than ceremonial. Think of it as the powder you reach for when you want sencha's clean, refreshing character, without brewing a kyusu and discarding the leaves.

Who This Tea Is For

  • For drinkers who want organic sencha character without brewing a kyusu — whisk and go
  • For people who would rather consume the whole leaf than steep and discard
  • For cooking and baking — sprinkle on rice, fold into yogurt or smoothies, into cookies and creams
  • For matcha drinkers curious about a brighter, less umami-driven whisked powder
  • For comparing this tea with nearby ShiZen Tea cups

What Makes This Tea Different

  • The same Taruwakien organic leaf as our loose-leaf sencha: Tea leaf grown by Taruwakien in Kawane, a family farm with over 40 years of organic cultivation. Finely ground in Shizuoka by Meiko Chagyo — the same Shizuoka tea processor that roasts our Organic Hojicha — into a fine, whisk-able powder.
  • Sencha powder is not matcha: Matcha is shaded leaf ground for ceremonial richness. This is unshaded organic sencha leaf — brighter and cleaner, with less umami and a more everyday feel. Pick this for the lightness and versatility; pick matcha for the deep umami.
  • Whole-leaf consumption: A loose-leaf brew leaves the leaf behind. A whisked powder lets you take in the leaf itself — including the color and the components that do not dissolve into a hot-water steep.
  • JAS Organic certification: Certified under Japan's JAS Organic standard from leaf to finished powder.

How to Use Organic Sencha Powder

Whisked Cup

  1. Powder: 1-2g (2g for a fuller cup, 1g for a lighter one)
  2. Water: 100 ml hot water, around 80 C / 176 F
  3. Whisk: in a bowl with a chasen until light and frothy, about 15 seconds

Use the same technique as matcha. The result is sencha's clean, refreshing character in a quick whisked cup — no kyusu, no spent leaves.

Cold Whisked / Shaken

  1. Powder: 1-2g
  2. Water: 100 ml cold water, in a shaker or jar with ice
  3. Shake hard for about 20 seconds

As a Latte (paste method)

  1. Powder: 2g (more for a richer cup, to taste)
  2. Hot water: about 20 ml, whisked into a smooth paste first
  3. Milk: 120-150 ml hot or cold milk, poured over the paste; stir or froth

The paste-first method is the standard for matcha-style lattes — it gives a smoother, lump-free cup.

In Cooking and Baking

Sprinkle 1-2g over hot rice, stir into yogurt or oatmeal, fold into smoothies, or use 1-2 teaspoons in cookies, ice cream, or sponge cake. The leaf adds color and a clean green-tea note.

Organic Certification

This tea is certified organic under Japan's JAS Organic standard and is sold as organic in the U.S. under the U.S.-Japan organic equivalence arrangement. The sencha leaf is grown to that standard at Taruwakien before being ground into powder in Shizuoka by Meiko Chagyo.

Teas to Try Alongside This One

This powder sits between loose-leaf sencha and matcha. Try these alongside it to compare powdered sencha, loose-leaf sencha, and matcha.

  • Organic Sencha: the loose-leaf version of the same Taruwakien Kawane leaf — brewed in a kyusu, with a lighter body. A clean side-by-side comparison of the same leaf, brewed vs. consumed whole.
  • Organic Matcha: the other whisked powder — shaded tencha, deeper umami, ceremonial-grade texture. For the umami-led side of whisked tea.
  • Genmaicha Powder with Matcha: the warmer, roasted-rice powder companion — whisk it for a comforting cup or a toasty latte.

Choosing a Few Teas

This tea ships directly from Japan. If you are choosing a few teas together, this sencha powder pairs naturally with a loose-leaf sencha and a matcha for the full range of Japanese green tea.

Comparison FAQ

Is this matcha?

No. Matcha is made from tencha, a shaded green tea leaf, stone-ground to a fine ceremonial-grade powder for deep umami and a vivid green cup. This is unshaded organic sencha leaf, machine-ground into powder — brighter, cleaner, and lighter in umami. Both are whisked the same way; the leaves are different.

How is this different from your loose-leaf Organic Sencha?

Both come from the same Taruwakien leaf in Kawane. The loose-leaf version is brewed in a kyusu and you discard the spent leaves. This powder version is whisked, so the whole leaf goes into the cup. You get a similar everyday-sencha flavor with a slightly fuller body, and there is nothing to discard.

Can I use this in cooking or smoothies?

Yes — that is one of its strengths. Sprinkle it on hot rice, fold it into smoothies, stir it into yogurt or oatmeal, or use it in cookies, ice cream, and sponge cake. The leaf adds color and a clean green-tea character.

Do I need a chasen to whisk it?

A traditional bamboo whisk (chasen) makes the smoothest cup, but a small kitchen whisk, a milk frother, or a shaker jar all work. The goal is to break up clumps and get the powder evenly suspended in the water; any tool that does that is fine.

Is this organic?

Yes. The leaf is JAS-certified organic from Taruwakien, and the finished powder is certified JAS Organic, sold as organic in the U.S. under the U.S.-Japan organic equivalence arrangement.
