A Warm Genmaicha Powder — Roasted Rice Meets Matcha-Coated Sencha

Most genmaicha is loose leaf — steeped in hot water, the rice and tea brew out together. This is genmaicha in whisked-powder form: organic sencha coated with organic matcha, blended with organic roasted brown rice, and finely ground for whisking. The cup combines genmaicha's familiar warm, toasted-rice comfort with matcha's body and color — a warm, toasted-rice character made with matcha-style preparation.

Three organic ingredients: a Taruwakien Kawane sencha base, dusted with matcha for body and umami, plus roasted brown rice for the toasted warmth. All blended and finely ground into a fine powder for whisking by Meiko Chagyo in Shizuoka — the same Shizuoka tea processor that roasts our Organic Hojicha. Because the whole blend goes into the cup, the toasted-rice aroma sits clearly on top, with matcha's green character underneath.

We like this tea warm — whisked plain in winter, or with steamed milk for a toasted-rice latte. Because roasted rice makes up part of the blend, the cup is lighter than straight matcha and works well when you want a gentler whisked tea.

Who This Tea Is For

  • For matcha drinkers who want a softer, toastier whisked cup as a change of pace
  • For genmaicha lovers who want a warm whisked version of their favorite loose-leaf tea
  • For latte making — toasted-rice + matcha + milk is a natural combination
  • For afternoons and evenings — naturally lower in caffeine than straight matcha
  • For comparing this tea with nearby ShiZen Tea cups

What Makes This Tea Different

  • A whisked genmaicha, not a brewed one: Most genmaicha is loose leaf, brewed in a kyusu. This is genmaicha as a whisked powder — the rice, the sencha, and the matcha all go into the cup. The toasted-rice aroma reads clearly on the nose, and the matcha gives the cup body and color.
  • Three organic ingredients, JAS-certified throughout: Organic sencha from Taruwakien (Kawane, over 40 years organic), organic matcha for body and umami, and organic roasted brown rice for warmth. The blend is JAS Organic from leaf to finished powder.
  • Warm and toasty, with matcha's body: The roasted brown rice gives a warm, comforting character; the matcha gives the cup deeper green and fuller body. A latte-friendly cup that drinks like roast and matcha at once.
  • Naturally lower in caffeine than straight matcha: Because the rice dilutes the leaf, this whisked cup is gentler than a matcha bowl — a more relaxed afternoon-and-evening choice.

How to Whisk Organic Genmaicha Powder

Whisked Cup

  1. Powder: 1-2g (2g for a fuller cup, 1g for a lighter one)
  2. Water: 100 ml hot water, around 80 C / 176 F
  3. Whisk: in a bowl with a chasen until light and frothy, about 15 seconds

Genmaicha Latte (hot) — paste method

  1. Powder: 2g (more for a richer cup, to taste)
  2. Hot water: about 20 ml, whisked into a smooth paste first
  3. Hot milk: 120-150 ml, steamed or warmed; pour over the paste and stir or froth

The paste-first method is the standard for matcha-style lattes — it gives a smoother, lump-free cup. The rice's toasted character carries beautifully into milk. A small drizzle of honey or maple is optional, not necessary.

Iced Latte — paste method

  1. Powder: 2g
  2. Hot water: about 20 ml, whisked into a smooth paste first
  3. Cold milk: 150-200 ml, poured over the paste with plenty of ice; stir to combine

Organic Certification

All three ingredients — the sencha base, the matcha, and the roasted brown rice — are JAS-certified organic. The finished blend is certified under Japan's JAS Organic standard and is sold as organic in the U.S. under the U.S.-Japan organic equivalence arrangement.

Teas to Try Alongside This One

This is the warm, toasty corner of the whisked-powder line. Try these alongside it to compare roasted-rice powder, straight matcha, and loose-leaf tea.

  • Organic Genmaicha with Matcha (loose leaf): the loose-leaf version of this blend — same idea, brewed in a kyusu instead of whisked. A clean side-by-side comparison.
  • Organic Matcha: the straight-matcha counterpart — deeper umami, fuller green, no rice. For when you want matcha without the toasted softening.
  • Organic Sencha Powder: the other whisked-powder sibling — un-roasted, no rice. The lighter, brighter half of the powder line.
  • Organic Hojicha: a different kind of warm Japanese tea — roasted leaf tea (no rice), brewed in a kyusu rather than whisked. The warmth comes from a leaf roast, not toasted rice.

Choosing a Few Teas

This tea ships directly from Japan. If you are choosing a few teas together, this powder pairs naturally with a straight matcha and a loose-leaf hojicha to taste the warm, roasted side of Japanese tea side by side.

Comparison FAQ

Is this matcha?

No. This is a blend of three organic ingredients: sencha coated with matcha, plus roasted brown rice. The matcha gives the cup body and color, but the dominant aroma is the roasted rice, and the sencha base keeps the cup lighter than a straight matcha. Straight matcha is more umami-led and fuller-bodied; this is warmer, toastier, and gentler.

How is this different from your loose-leaf Genmaicha with Matcha (100g)?

The components are the same family — organic sencha, matcha, and roasted brown rice — but the form is different. The 100g version is loose leaf, brewed in a kyusu, and you discard the spent leaves. This 40g powder is whisked, so the whole blend goes into the cup. The whisked version has a fuller body and a more concentrated toasted-rice aroma; the loose-leaf version is lighter and works better as a steeped everyday cup.

Can I make a genmaicha latte?

Yes — this is one of its strongest uses. Whisk 2-3g with a little hot water until smooth, then add hot or cold milk. The toasted-rice character carries beautifully into a latte; the matcha gives the cup body and color. A small drizzle of honey is optional, not needed.

Does this have less caffeine than straight matcha?

Yes. Because the rice and sencha base dilute the matcha, the same 2g serving of this powder contains less caffeine than 2g of straight matcha. Serving size and preparation still matter, but this blend is lighter than straight matcha at the same powder amount.

Is this organic?

Yes. All three components — sencha, matcha, and roasted brown rice — are JAS-certified organic, and the finished blend is certified under Japan's JAS Organic standard.
